Zakir Husain College (Evening), New Delhi Overview
The oldest college in Delhi is Zakir Husain College. Ghaziuddin Firoz Jung founded it as a Madrasah outside Ajmeri Gate in 1780. In 1825, it became Delhi College, and it was recognized as “Dilli College” at the time. It had to be shut down in the middle of the nineteenth century owing to political events such as the Great Uprising of 1857. It was reopened and relocated to Kashmiri Gate in the same building where the Indraprastha University’s offices are now.
Following that, in 1864, the College moved to Chandni Chowk, where the current Town Hall now stands, for a period of time. It was restored to its former location at Ajmeri Gate in 1867. Delhi College amalgamated with Government College, Lahore, in 1877. The college was hit hard by the country’s partition in 1947, but it resumed under its previous name, Delhi College, after a brief hiatus. Some of the most illustrious public figures, as well as national and international educationists and academics, have been associated with and participated in the school.
Dr Zakir Husain Memorial College Trust took over the College in 1975 and renamed it Zakir Husain College. The aforementioned Trust manages Zakir Husain Delhi College (Evening), which is chaired by India’s Prime Minister. In 1958, evening classes were started. By providing the push for them to become honourable citizens of the country, the College actively encourages young boys and girls to strive for their fullest potential. Many of our graduates have excelled in the disciplines of arts, culture, and science, and a number have gone on to hold significant positions in both the public and private sectors.
